My 15 year old cat was diagnosed with IBD around age 6. She was put on a low residue diet but continued to vomit and have blood in her stool. She would get regular steroid shots, which would help for a little while, but then she would be back to vomiting again. Finally, about three years ago I discovered higher quality foods like Wellness and Innova Evo. My cat’s symptoms of IBD have completely disappeared. I haven’t had to give her a steroid shot in two and a half years. She does still vomit occasionally but the vet said it is from her kidney failure, not her IBD. I would strongly recommend you research high quality foods and give that a try before you resign yourself to medication.
Medication and special food is not that expensive, the tests to find out what the problem is are expensive.
You’re lucky you know what the problems is – strictly adhere to the diet and medication program for your cat as this is a life time issue.
I’m pretty sure that’s what my last cat had, and she was put on Prednisone. That was about $4 per bottle and I think that bottle lasted a month.
But….I highly recommend you look into other options if it’s suggested that your cat be put on steroids.
I’m not an expert in this area but I have done lots of research and belong to groups where IBD has been discussed, so I know that in some cases it can be controlled by diet alone.
If I could do it over again I’d research the heck out of it and I’m sure Martha would have enjoyed her last years much more.
So just a suggestion…..see the link below for some info to get you started if you’re interested.
Our cat once suffered from bleeding from the rectum. We changed foods (the food we were feeding her was the problem). Once we changed foods, the bleeding stopped. She even got her name due to the flatulence she suffered from this problem (Beany). I would also be very careful with medicines, because when we medicated our dog for a stomach problem, after she got into the trash, the medications for the irritated stomach caused a seizure. Look up possible side effects for the medicines, to be sure you really want to use them.
It’s more then what the meds cost.Usually prednisone is prescribed and that shouldn’t be much.
You need to learn about this disease and the first thing is to change the diet. Not to that crap the vet will try to sell you but some quality food. The best thing to feed your cat would be a raw diet. If interested, I can send you links on how to make it
